The question is fair: do used tennis rackets lead you straight to bargain-ville, or do they pose an unnecessary risk? For one, without exception, all tennis rackets are manufactured to be durable. Some players even play for more than ten years with one single racket. Plus, there is a notable difference between rackets and skis: with tennis, the leading manufacturers design their products in a way that the stringing absorbs the ball's impact for the most part. However, the frame hardly gives in on impact and does not oscillate, which would wear on the material. Skis, on the other hand, are bent considerably with every turn, which leads to material fatigue, plus less clamping force and elasticity. A tennis racket is a whole different animal.
The materials most rackets are made from hardly experience any fatigue and, therefore, keep their gripping force. Hence, there is no reason not to buy a used tennis racket and save some money. Even more so, since, at Tennis-Point, we offer second-hand rackets of all leading manufacturers. Either they have been used as test rackets or customers sent them back, because they, against expectation, did not enjoy playing with the racket they had bought in our shop. Maybe they bought a model with a grip strength not suited for their style of play and hands.
As soon as we receive rackets back, we subject them to thorough testings before releasing them for sale. There, the main focus lies on the frame. We submit the frame to an intense visual inspection. If the paint shows visible damage, we check these parts meticulously for material damage. Only if we can eliminate inner fractures or damages of any other kind, the frame receives a positive test rating. Of course, we also inspect the shaft and grip.
Most players use an overgrip over the base grip tape. Therefore, the racket's ex-factory grip tape is usually as good as new. However, in case of doubt, we install a new base grip tape in our shop. The drillings in the frame are equipped with a grommet that is supposed to protect the stringing. It has to be intact when you buy a used racket, which is why we also check the drillings. Our professional inspection of second-hand rackets includes the following aspects:
Especially beginners like to buy second-hand rackets because they cannot tell after only a few hours how likely they are to stick to the sport. Generally, when buying a used racket, you need to keep the same factors in mind as when picking a brand-new model. Here, you find the exact specifications of tennis rackets.
If you have just picked up tennis, second-hand rackets are the best choice. Just make sure you choose the right grip strength when browsing the shop for your preferred model. To find out which suits you, borrow other players' rackets at your club and place your hand around the grip's bottom. The gap between your ball of the thumb and index finger on the other side of the grip should now be big enough to place your other index finger in between. It works? Now check the racket's frame for the exact grip strength, which is now yours. With that information in mind, you visit our shop for the second-hand racket you like best. When you click on a model, you immediately see which grip strengths are available for the used racket. If you discover yours, you can calmly push the "Buy now" button.
Used tennis rackets make a lot of sense for beginners; simultaneously, they can function as an excellent alternative for advanced players when browsing our shop for new equipment – mainly because the big brands change their racket line once a year. So, if you have found a model that suits your game, you might want to buy a back-up or even a third racket for a tournament. However, all too often there are no more new models of your favourite racket, which is precisely the point our shop's "used rackets" section comes into play.
Generally, all big brands offer really good rackets. This goes for advanced players as much as for beginners. But, if you have just started playing tennis, you will certainly find it easier to play a racket with a so-called "neutral frame," which you will find in our "allround racket" section. Those models are well-balanced and excuse less accurate hits more often than, for example, tour rackets. Our racket advisor offers an easy way to find a racket tailored to your game and level of play as well as the right manufacturer: you just enter a bit of information, and shortly after, our racket advisor will present you with models that match your details.
And now, have fun picking your used tennis racket!
